Welcome to our July Karen Burniston Designer Challenge.
Check out Karen Burniston's blog on Wednesday (US Time) when you will be able to see what all the designers created for the challenge this month, plus Karen will have an amazing video tutorial to share with us all.
Our challenge theme this month is ... "TWO FOLDS" - make a card that incorporates two folds. This could be a side gatefold, a top gatefold, a side fold with an extra card inside, a z-fold, a double easel, etc. Any theme!
Earlier in the year, Karen Burniston shared a tutorial showing how to use the Surprise Ball Pop-up to create a Billboard Surprise Ball Pop-up. I have been wanting to make a card using that technique for sometime now and seeing as the billboard is inside of a gatefold card, the challenge today was the perfect opportunity to make one. You can view Karen's tutorial here.
A friend also asked me to make a birthday card for her mother who is turning 100 this month, so I decided this would be a fun card to use for that.
To create my card I created a Gatefold card which is 5 1/2 inches square when folded. I used the Surprise Ball Pop-up in the centre of the card which is what the "billboard" is attached to.
I used circle dies from the Crosshatch Circles die set to make the large circle on the Surprise Ball and the two smaller circles on either side of the narrow panels. One of the small circles contains a stamped birthday sentiment, the other is blank so a handwritten greeting can be written there.
I created a birthday cake using one of the rounded rectangle dies included in the Twist Panel Pop-up die set. I die cut two of the rectangles and turned one on it's side to adhere to the top of the bottom rectangle to create a tiered cake. I used the trim from the Cake Pop-up die set to add the icing to the cake which is die cut from white glitter card.
The flowers on the top tier of the cake are from the Tree Pop-up die set, I added Nuvo drops to the centre of each of the flowers. To finish off the cake I added the "100" which is die cut from gold glitter card using the Numbers die set.
I created a belly band to slip over the card when it is closed, so the card stays closed. To decorate the belly band I used the Crosshatch Ovals die set and added the Happy Birthday which was die cut from gold glitter card.
Here is a look at my card when it is closed ready to be placed in an envelope.
