December 2023 Karen Burniston Designer Challenge

Welcome to our December Karen Burniston Designer Challenge.

Our challenge theme this month is ... "NAUGHTY OR NICE?" - Make a Christmas card that incorporates a stocking. This can be the Stocking Pop-up or the Holiday Charms stocking or the Fireplace Extras or whatever you can dream up!

As you can see by the photos above, I created a Christmas themed Slimline Pop-up card for this month's challenge. Besides being Designer Challenge time, it is also the start of sneak peeks for the release next Monday 11th December, so I couldn't resist adding at least one new die to my card.

For the pop-up portion of my card I used the new Raising Platform Pop-up die set for the top pop up on this card. I added the "Ho Ho Ho" sentiment from the Small Script - Christmas die set to the label. I made my slimline card to measure 3 3/4 inches x 8 1/2 inches to allow for the Raising Platform Pop-up.

The bottom pop-up uses the Stocking Pop-up die set, I like how both pop ups can be used together to create a double pop-up card. 

I added more sentiments from the Small Script- Christmas for the "Holly Jolly Christmas" to the left panel of the pop-up.

When the card is opened, the content of the stock is revealed. Besides using the present, bow & candy cane to the inside of the stock which are all from the Stocking Pop-up die set. I also used the bear from the Winter Animals die set and the foliage from the Holiday Charms die set.

For the front of the card I used the fireplace from the Fireplace Pop-up die set and the Fireplace Extras 1 die set. I had to cut the sides of the fireplace down a little so it would fit onto the width of the slimline card.

For the sentiment, I used the Merry Christmas and Merry Christmas Shadow die sets.

Welcome to our December Karen Burniston Designer Challenge.

Our challenge theme this month is ...  "FIREPLACE DIE THROUGH THE YEAR" - you signed up for a month to represent with a card using the Fireplace Pop-up matching the theme of that month.

As you might be able to guess from the photo of my card, I have December which of course is Christmas!

Sneak peeks for the new December release have also started, so I have used two of the new dies on my card today .. I will talk more about them later.

I have used the fireplace pop-up die on a few different formats of card sizes so far ... Slimline; square and today I have created a 5 x 7 inch card. I am really enjoying this larger format card, like the Slimline it gives you extra room to create whatever you wish on it.

As well as the Fireplace pop-up, I also used the Fireplace Extras 1 and Fireplace Extras 2 to add the various details to my fireplace and scene. I positioned the fireplace to the left of my card to give me room for other things.

I couldn't do a Christmas scene without adding a Christmas tree, this time around I used the Christmas Tree Pop-up die set, using one of the larger trees in the set to die cut three trees. I then layered them up trimming as need to make a taller tree. I wanted the tree to be higher than my fireplace. This tree does have a few notches on it to create the 3D tree it was designed for, but I covered those up using baubles that I die cut using red mirror card. I also added a star to the top of the tree, making sure the star was enclosed in the card when the card is closed.

One of the new die sets being release next week is the Hexagons -  Crosshatch die set ... a great addition to the Crosshatch collection. I used two of the dies included in the set to create the rug in front of the fire. I also used this as a place to stamp a Christmas sentiment.

Another of the new dies included in this newest release is the Bam Box Pop-up. This is such a fun new die set and there are so many different ways this can be used, I am sure it will become a much loved favourite. I used the Bam Box Pop-up on this card to pop my girl up.I postitioned her on an angle and closer to the front, to give her enough room to fold down when closing the card. For the girl and the surrounding wrapping paper, I used two older stamp sets from Essentials by Ellen.

I also used the Gift Pivot Panels to die cut some presents to put under the tree and one beside the girl.

The focus of this card is on the inside, so I kept the front of my card fairly simple. I added the snowflake background using the Snowflake Pattern Plate die, die cutting it twice from white cardstock. I also created a white frame to go around the edge of the card.

I used the Hexagon - Crosshatch die set again to add the green panel to the centre of my card. I then added the sentiment using the Merry Christmas and Merry Christmas Shadow die sets.

I have another Christmas card to share with you today, using dies from Karen Burniston. I have gone with no traditional Christmas colours for my card, taking inspiration from a paper pad I recently received.

For my card today I have mixed some of the recently released products with some previously released, the great thing about Karen Burniston's dies is that everything works together.

For the front of my card I added the fireplace scene using the Fireplace Pop-up die set, this die set works well as either a pop-up on the inside or flat on the front as I have used on my card. I also used the Fireplace Extras 1 die set to add some of the additional images to may card.

The presents on the lower left side of my card were created using the gifts included in the Gift Pivot Panels die set.

I also added a stamped sentiment, using MFT Stamps Bitty Holiday Sentiments stamp set.

For the inside of my card, I created a pop-up card using the Gift Pivot Panels die set. I used colours inspired by the designer paper to add the presents to the pop-up panel.

The layers on the front and inside of my card were all die cut using the Rectangles - Crosshatch die set. I also added a white rectangle panel to the right side of my card for a place to write a personal greeting.

To finish off my card I added the "Merry Christmas" sentiment. This is a two line sentiment die, so I cut it apart to make it fit on my card.

 

Christmas Wishes

Thanks for visiting my blog. As you can see I have a Christmas card to share with you.

Earlier in the month I shared my first Christmas card for 2022 when I used the new Karen Burniston Fireplace Pop-up die set in a Slimline card. The card had plenty of room on the side of the fireplace to add other details like a tree etc, but not much room above the fireplace for anything. Today I decided to share a 5 inch square version where I was able to use more of the accessories to decorate above the fireplace. I love that this die set will fit in all sizes of cards that we like to create.

The accessories for the fireplace above and around come from the Fireplace Extras 1 and Fireplace Extras 2 die sets

It's hard to tell by the photo above, but if you look carefully you can see that Santa is trying to come down the chimney ... see his boots! I think you can tell a little better by the side view photo above. In real life, it is a lot easier to see and the boots jiggle around a little too.

I used two oval dies from the Ovals - Crosshatch die set which I added in front of the fireplace, this serves as a rug and a place to add a Christmas sentiment.

I kept the front of the card simple, as the focus is on the inside of this card, I added the left over strip of patterned paper and then added the Merry Christmas sentiment using the Merry Christmas and Merry Christmas Shadow die sets.

My card today uses three of the new die sets being released ... Fireplace Pop-up; Fireplace Extras 1 and Fireplace Extras 2 die sets.

I knew that the Fireplace Pop-up die would fit in a Mini Slimline card, so I decided to see how it would work in a Slimline card. My card measures 3 1/2 inches x 8 1/2 inches which is my preferred size for a Slimline card. I am happy how it turned out, however if I make another where I included the Christmas tree and fireplace I probably will go for a 4 inch size in height as I did have to trim the candles on the fireplace and the Christmas Tree, so that nothing showed out of the card when the card was closed.

I used woodgrain paper for the floor and red and green plaid for the walls, die cutting the papers using the largest rectangle die included in the Long Rectangles - Crosshatch die set. 

For the fireplace you have the option to have either a fire or Santa's boots showing in the opening. As I already had adhered the place square behind the fireplace opening I opted for the fire. The fire guard, wood and wood holder are all from the Fireplace Extras 2 die set, all the other accessories decorating the fireplace are from the Fireplace  Extras 1 die set.

For the Christmas tree, I used the Christmas Trees Pop Stand die set. As I wanted the tree to pop up and be 3D, I assembled it a little differently to how the instructions say. I have a tutorial on how I assembled my tree on previous blog post here. As mentioned above I did have to trim a little off the top of the tree to keep it all within the card when closed.

I used two of the rectangle dies included in the Long Rectangles - Crosshatch die set to create the "mat", this also serves as a place to add a sentiment. I selected a sentiment that referred to "From our Home to Yours", I have included this in the supply list below.

As the focus of this card is on the inside, I kept the front of the card fairly simple. I added the "Merry Christmas" sentiment using the Merry Christmas and Merry Christmas Shadow die sets.

I also added two trees using the centre portion of the large tree from the Christmas Trees Pop-Stand die set. I added red Glitter Dot Peel Off Stickers to all trees, both on the front and inside of my card.
